Short-term liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tank car lease rates rallied sharply at mid-week as cold weather pushed south across North America and a once-dormant lease market sprang to life.

Temperatures in the 20s and 30s were seen stretching from Oklahoma to North Carolina, weather.com was showing on Thursday afternoon. Falling temperatures have spurred residential heating demand for propane. That has rippled through the propane supply chain with retailers calling wholesalers for supply and wholesalers, in turn, ordering more tank cars of propane.
