BNSF Said to Be Mulling DOT-117R Tank Car Restrictions for Crude Oil: Sources

The future of crude oil shipments in DOT-117R tank cars is increasingly in question as a key railroad that hauls the cars is said to be mulling restrictions on their use. The BNSF is considering not signing new shipping contracts for crude oil carried in DOT-117R tank cars, sources familiar with the discussions told Energy Transport Insider. This would not affect current business, the sources added. Nor would the restrictions apply to the use of DOT-117Rs used to carry ethanol and refined products such as diesel and gasoline. The railroad may have other options to discourage their use for crude oil cargoes as well....
