BNSF Files for PTC 2-year Extension: BNSF Locos Compliant, but Other RR Locos Not

BNSF Railway’s locomotives are positive train control (PTC) compliant, but that’s not necessarily the case for locomotives from other railroads running on its rails.

In December, the railroad said it had fully installed PTC on all its required subdivisions ahead of the Dec. 31, 2018 deadline. Thursday, however, the railroad said it filed a request with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for a two-year extension. PTC, a safety system designed to reduce or eliminate rail accident, was mandated by Congress following a deadly 2008 Metrolink-Union Pacific accident in the Los Angeles area.
