Rail Provides Growing Share of Hattiesburg Hub’s Propane Supply

The natural gas liquids (NGL) storage hub at Hattiesburg, Mississippi was a key destination for rail shipments of propane that were diverted from the shutdown of Sunoco Pipeline’s Mariner East 1 (ME1) NGL pipeline in March and April. The Pennsylvania Public Utilities Commission (PA PUC) ordered the line shut in early March when sinkholes were discovered near the line. The line reopened earlier this month and was ordered shut again on Thursday – which could result in more shipments.

The diversion of the propane to the storage hub highlights the fact this southeast storage hub is increasingly supplied by non-Gulf Coast propane and receives it by rail, not pipeline.
