Union Pacific Will Miss 2018 PTC Implementation Deadline

The Union Pacific railroad announced this week that by the end of 2018, it will have all of the necessary positive train control (PTC) equipment installed on its system. But the railroad will not have it fully operational.

In a statement, the railroad said: "As allowed by federal law, Union Pacific will continue to test and refine the immature technologies comprising the system in 2019-20."

The railroad is taking advantage of a provision included in a 2015 Congressional extension of the PTC implementation that allows railroads to ask for even more time to install the train control system.
