Senate Bill May Revive Short-Line Tax Credit, Enable Billions in Track Improvements

A bill introduced late last month by Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah promises to make short-line and regional railroads more financially viable, as it could make available billions of dollars for infrastructure improvements.

The Section 45G provision of S. 2256 - Tax Extender Act of 2017 would allow short -line and regional railroads to each claim a 50-cent tax credit for each dollar they spend on maintenance and track rehabilitation projects, up to $3,500 per mile of owned or leased track.
