Trucking Industry ELD Mandate May Mean Increased Use of Rail for Energy Transport

At the July meeting of the Midwest Association of Rail Shippers (MARS) meeting in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin this year, attendees expressed concerns that the increased use of technology in the trucking industry could leave rail behind as a primary means of transport for energy products. At this time, however, it’s becoming apparent that the mandated use of electronic logging devices (ELDs) could likely lead to an increased use of rail -- at least in the energy sector.
