What do you do with an empty liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tank car?
As was seen this year, it’s a great place to store 30,000 gallons of LPG cheaply purchased in the spring for the coming winter. And even more volume is likely to be stored that way in 2018.
It’s the continuation of a trend that took off last summer.
How much product was stored in tank cars last summer is not known. There is no official tally, but estimates have circulated. One source speculated that 10,000 to 12,000 tank cars were used. The average LPG tank car can hold 30,000 gallons (714 bbl of product). That equates to a maximum of 8.6 million bbl.
