FRA: At 2016 End, Positive Train Control in Use by Up To 16% of Required Freight Tracks

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) said this week that at the end of 2016 positive train control (PTC) systems were active on 16% of freight railroad trackage, up from 12 percent in third quarter of 2016. Federal law requires the U.S. railroad industry to have the system rolled out nationwide by 2018. PTC systems are designed to prevent train-to-train collisions, derailments due to excessive speed, train movements into work zones, and trains going onto the wrong track because a switch was left in the wrong position. ...
